The Dordogne is located in the southwest of France between the Loire Valley and the Hautes-Pyrénées. It is the third largest department in France !
Former province of Périgord, the Dordogne has a rich cultural and historical heritage thanks to all these remarkable sites including the prehistoric ones.
It has over 5000 castles, with the most famous : the castle of Hautefort, the castle of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, the castle of Commarque, the castle of Monbazillac, the castle of Beynac...
The caves of Lascaux (very famous) are closed to the public today, but a copy of the Lascaux caves (Lascaux II), is opened to visitors and is one of the major tourist attractions of the Dordogne.
You have also to visit Belvès Beynac-et-Cazenac, Domme, Limeuil, Monpazier, La Roque-Gageac, Saint-Amand-de-Coly, Saint-Jean-de-Côle, Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère.
Have a nice trip !
