Unlike trains, planes or ferries, motorhomes are one of the most responsible and environmentally friendly ways to go on vacation. So why not continue on the same path by adopting new behaviors to make your travels even greener?
CaraMaps gives you its top 10 eco-tips to become the perfect motorhome driver!
1. Find an eco-responsible location
The basis for a green holiday is of course to find a responsible place to spend the night. Say goodbye to 5-stars campsites with heated swimming pools, permanently lit toilets and other energy-efficient facilities … There are labels attesting the ecological responsibility of areas and campsites such as the Green Key label.
For eco-friendly trips you can of course opt for natural areas and parking dedicated to motorhomes.
2. Make your laundry powder
Making your own detergent can on one hand reduce your consumption of packaging and also produce personal satisfaction from having it done by yourself. Don’t worry, it’s easy, fast and above all economical.
You’ll need :
- 100g Marseille soap (white)
- 30g of soda percarbonate
- 50g of soda crystals
- 50g of baking soda
- A few drops of lavender essential oil
When you have all the ingredients, you can just mix everything in a bowl and transfer it into a container that can be closed. Super easy!
When washing, put a teaspoon in a bowl of warm water for hand washing or a tablespoon in the washing machine drum in the middle of the clothes.
3. Make your toothpaste in powder
As with making your laundry powder, making toothpaste power is a simple, quick and efficient process.
- 8g white clay (very soft abrasive that neutralizes acidity)
- 5g calcium carbonate (mild abrasive)
- 5g of activated carbon (detaches, cleanses and, strangely, whitens teeth)
- 10 drops of lemon essential oil (antibacterial and whitening)
- 10 drops of spearmint essential oil (for fresh breath)
First, you need to mix all the powders together. Once mixed, add the essential oils and mix until you obtain a homogeneous result. Pour it all into a pot and voila!
When brushing your teeth, put a little amount of powder on the brush and do a conventional brushing.
4. Switch to Bordeaux mixture
This product is an alternative to liquid toilet products that help prevent unpleasant smells. These liquids are often harmful to the planet and to humans due to the unnatural chemical components they contain. Bordeaux mixture is a mixture of copper sulphate and lime water, which gives a clear, greenish blue porridge. It prevents the development of microorganisms. Two tablespoons is enough!
5. Install solar panels
Although solar panels are not sufficient for a complete autonomy of your motorhome, they can save a lot on energy consumption. There are kits, sold on accessory websites for motorhomes, that you can install by yourself if you wish. Think about it in the summer, especially from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the performance is higher. There are different types of solar panels that depend on the vehicle. Inform yourself to acquire the appropriate solar panel for your motorhome and get the best possible energy supply!
6. Use solid soaps
Say goodbye to plastic packaging during your trip. Very good for the skin, solid Marseille soaps (for example) last a long time and do not need a plastic container. In addition, no fear, they do not sink into your stuff! You can also use them for washing up dishes.
7. Think about second-hand shopping
What could be more responsible than recycling equipment? From motorhomes to accessories, everything is available in second-hand. Before you buy anything, check if it’s available in a second-hand store. You can also find websites that sell used accessories. The planet will thank you and your wallet too!
8. Reduce CO2 emissions
We know that motorhomes are the most responsible way to go on vacation. However, like all vehicles, they emit CO2 emissions. By driving relaxed, without hard braking and excessive acceleration emissions are reduced. Also check the tire pressure, if they are not enough inflated the grip may lead to consuming more fuel. Small gestures that can do good to our planet!
9. Favor reusable utensils
To be a responsible traveler, forget plastic (and even cardboard!) plates and cutlery. Buy or use real dishes, one set per person is enough.
Also favor glass containers such as jams jars to reuse them later as Tupperware or to keep your homemade laundry powder!
10. Dispose of all waste properly
A piece of advice which may seem obvious, but which is important to remember. When you leave a place, make sure you have thrown away all of your waste (plastic, paper, glass, etc.). Even during pee breaks, do not throw your handkerchiefs and paper outside. Also try to sort your waste, it’s always better for the planet!
We hope these ten tips will help you become an even more responsible and green traveler!
